Chickapea is looking for a Product & Innovation Manager, reporting to the CEO.

This position is a work from home position that requires frequent travel to manufacturing and R&D facilities in Canada, the US and Europe.

In this role, you will be overseeing the identification, development, and production of new products. You must ensure that ideas are technically and commercially viable. As the Product and Innovation Manager, you will drive the development process from conception to implementation to ensure products meet customers’ needs, determine cost-efficient production methods, conduct customer research activities to assess gaps in service and ensure compliance with all necessary regulatory bodies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Innovation strategy:

  • Support the creation of a multi-year innovation pipeline across multiple innovation platforms. Align pipeline with the organizational model.
  • Support innovation concept development from ideation through to concept creation & testing.

Support product-related growth strategies, including:

  • Overarching category growth strategies.
  • Portfolio segmentation & priority growth SKU’s.
  • Pricing strategy.

Conduct periodic business reviews to understand business performance and growth opportunities, including support with:

  • Conducting market research & trend review to inform product development strategies.
  • Conducting qualitative and quantitative consumer research to maximize future product potential (both existing and new products).
  • Sales growth analysis and source of volume.

Support cross-functional team to develop new products from conception to launch:

  • General project management (create & manage timelines & resources, facilitate task force meetings, meeting agendas/minutes and budget).
  • Brief R&D on product requirements (product brief) and review/assess subsequent recipe iterations vs. predefined positioning and quality standards.
  • Oversee packaging development process.
  • Support product costing, consumer pricing & P&L analysis.
  • Support the creation of sales launch materials, including customer presentation decks, sell sheets, trade execution plans, etc.
  • Project administration (project documentation, master data setup).
  • Support post-launch review tracking.

Support the collaborative cross-functional efforts to evaluate product lifecycle and product strategy of products:

  • Support product management initiatives, including:
    • Packaging artwork optimization & change requests.
    • Product optimization & re-development projects (including product tasting & artwork changes).
  • Support the discontinuation process, including performance analysis, recommendations, and approval process.

Support brand financial health:

  • Provide sound recommendations on product & innovation go/no-go decisions based on sales & margin contribution.
  • Support product cost reduction projects.
  • Provide insight and recommendation on product mix, pricing & trade spend direction.

Brand marketing support:

  • Provide support regarding brand growth projections, packaging updates within the product portfolio, and marketing support for new product innovation launches.
  • Assist with brand projects as needed to support brand growth.


Skills and Experience Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Marketing.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in product development/innovations.
  • Relevant work experience within a research and development department would be beneficial as well as specific experience in natural foods.
  • Project management, including the ability to manage a variety of projects with varying levels of complexity.
  • Strategic thinking and analytical skills for data & research interpretation.
  • Creativity and an innovative mindset are essential for this role.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to support internal partners and stakeholders effectively and collaboratively.
  • Strong financial analysis skills.
  • Experience supporting the management of budgets.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and exhibit the highest level of customer/client service and response.
  • Advanced working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with a desire to support business growth.
  • Ability to take the initiative and navigate ambiguity with support.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
  • The flexibility to work outside of regular business hours on an as-needed basis.
  • The ability to travel as needed within Canada, United States and Europe.
