Job Description

Looking for a meaningful job with a great team addressing a pressing challenge in Canada? Water First addresses First Nations’ drinking water and environmental water challenges through education, training, and meaningful collaboration.

Our team is expanding, and we are currently adding five (5) new Technical Trainer and Project Coordinator positions to our team, reporting to the Director, Operations. Our Environmental and Drinking Water Internship programs focus on addressing the gap in access to water science training in Indigenous communities by integrating technical training with hands-on, project-based learning in partner communities.  Project development and delivery is done in collaboration with community and tribal council partners and aims to address specific community goals (i.e., strengthen technical abilities in a band office, recruit, and train young drinking water operators, develop a network of water quality monitors).  This position will support the delivery and expansion of our technical programming in line with this philosophy.

There is an opportunity for these roles to be remote work-from-home positions. Candidates must be available to travel as required for critical meetings during the week to the Creemore, Ontario office located at 178 Mill St., Unit D.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Delivering water science-focused training sessions:
    • Including fundamentals of water chemistry, hydrology, and aquatic ecology; sampling & monitoring parameters; water treatment and distribution, site instrumentation and field protocols; data management & mapping of drinking water and environmental water quality data.
    •  Facilitating technical training sessions in a respectful, hands-on, project-based manner to learners with diverse backgrounds.
  • Project management and design:
    • Creating and adapting work plans, tracking deliverables, monitoring budgets, troubleshooting, and adapting project plans in an anticipatory fashion.
    • Developing sampling plans and coordinating sample analysis.
  • Indigenous community collaboration & project coordination:
    •  Developing projects in collaboration with community partners.
    •  Supporting student recruitment, training, tutoring, and ongoing engagement with project partners and community members (e.g., band office managers, water treatment plant operators, environmental/lands, and resources staff, Chief and Council, etc.).
  • Coordinating daily work tasks (field-based and in treatment plant), exams, communicating with students and mentoring students.
  • Evaluations, internal/external reporting, permit applications.
  • Program refinement, adding to our manuals and documenting for future program iterations.


The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

  • Related degree, diploma, or certification in one or more of the following fields: drinking water or wastewater treatment, water engineering, hydrology, water chemistry, aquatic ecology and/or environmental science.
  • Minimum of 2 years technical field project experience.
  • Teaching or training experience with mature students (facilitating workshops with hands-on, project-based learning, developing curriculum, mentoring learners during work experience, etc.).
  • Experience in drinking water, wastewater, surface water sampling, monitoring and laboratory testing.
  • You can communicate effectively, both orally and written, with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in coordinating community projects and working with multiple stakeholders.
  • Regular access to a vehicle & willingness to travel to northern Indigenous communities approximately 25% of the time (travel time will be seasonal – Summer and Fall).
  • Class G driver’s license, with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work effectively from home and on the road.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and awareness.
  • Working knowledge of administrative and presentation software, including Google Suite, Drive and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work respectfully and collaboratively in a dynamic, multi-faceted team environment and work independently.
  • A willingness to continually expand one’s professional skill set, learn on the job, take on additional responsibilities as required and respond to and thrive in a dynamic work environment.
  • Candidates must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada under relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • A vulnerable sector security check is required as part of the hiring process.

The following are considered assets:

  • Advanced/graduate degree in one of the fields of study noted above.
  • Fluent in the French language, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with environmental restoration.
  • Experience with ArcGIS mapping software.
  • Experience in designing water quality and/or hydrological sampling plans.
  • Experience in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Operator-in-Training Certification (Water and Wastewater) and Water Quality Analyst Certification.
  • Certified to teach BEAHR, CABIN or OSAP.
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership experience and excellence.
  • Experience with Indigenous community engagement.
